Craft a frugal patriotic decoration with a DIY ribbon flag

A Step-by-Step Tutorial on Making an Easy DIY Ribbon Flag That Doesn’t Require a Sewing Machine – The Perfect Addition to Your Patriotic Holidays

Are you looking to add a touch of whimsy and charm to your home without breaking the bank? Look no further than a DIY ribbon flag! If you don’t want to deal with in-ground flag posts, this American flag home décor is the perfect alternative.

These fun and budget-friendly craft projects are the ideal way to infuse color and personality into your home, whether indoors or outdoors. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of creating your own patriotic ribbon flag, from gathering materials to displaying your finished masterpiece. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting out, DIY ribbon flags are a great way to show off your holiday spirit.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Having everything you need at hand will make the crafting process smooth and enjoyable. Most of these materials can be found at craft stores. Once you have them ready, you can choose your colors and patterns for your DIY flag.

  • Large ric rac
  • Lace white ribbon
  • Red ribbon with texture
  • 2 yards of red fabric
  • 2 yards of white fabric
  • Blue star fabric
  • A long stick, piece of wood, or wood dowel
  • Scissors or rotary cutter

When selecting your colors and patterns, don’t hesitate to let your creativity run wild. Whether you prefer a neutral color scheme or a mix of vibrant shades, the choice is yours. You can experiment by blending and matching different patterns to add visual interest to your ribbon flag.

I decided to make my ribbon flag as a decorative reproduction of the United States flag, so I looked for patriotic USA flag ribbon to complement it. I ended up finding cute red-and-white fabrics, some solid and others featuring white stars. Different textures are fun too. If you want to make a flag like mine, you’ll definitely need a square of white and blue star fabric to mimic the corner of the original flag.

Step 2: Cut Your Fabric Strips

Start by tearing your fabric into individual strips. Each fabric strip should be around 1 1/2 inches wide. I prefer thick strips for a more durable flag. A simple way to do this is by measuring and making small cuts along the edge where you will tear the fabric.

Use scissors or a fabric rotary cutter to mark your strips, then tear the fabric lengthwise. This process can be a bit time-consuming, but it’s a great task nonetheless. I love the rustic look of the unfinished edges.

Here’s what your fabric strips should look like when you’re finished. I have solid white stripes, solid red, red-and-white star patterns, and a red-and-white polka dot for my fabric flag.

Step 3: Create Your Design

Next, create your design by laying out your chosen ribbons in a visually appealing pattern. You can go for a simple striped design, a chevron pattern, or even a more intricate geometric arrangement. Experiment with different placements and combinations until you find a design that resonates with you.

For my DIY ribbon flag, I chose a pattern of two red strips followed by two white. Another great way to enhance your design is by painting the stick or “flag pole” with acrylic paint before adding the different colors of ribbon, if you’d like.

Step 4: Add Personal Touches

For an added touch of individuality, consider incorporating small details like buttons, sequins, or wooden accents. These little decorations can elevate your design and make it unique. Get creative and let your imagination run wild as you embellish the edges of your fabric with these decorative elements.

We added strands of textured ribbon over the fabric strips on my DIY ribbon flag. Use high-quality nylon ribbon to ensure the flag lasts. While you could use lace, it might not have the durability you need. Anytime you hang décor outside, you want it to withstand the elements. I added my blue star square as the finishing touch.

Step 5: Display Your Flag

Once you’ve put the finishing touches on your ribbon flag, it’s time to display it. Grab some hemp twine and hang your flag on a wall or your front door. Whether you display it in your living room, office, or front porch, your handmade creation will surely catch the eye of anyone who passes by. Show off your crafty skills and let your ribbon flag shine for all to admire.

I absolutely love this cheerful display on my front porch for the upcoming patriotic holidays. It has just the right amount of classic charm for our celebrations. I hung mine above my front porch bench to create a fun focal point in the space.

There you have it—DIY ribbon flags are a simple, budget-friendly, and fun way to add a personalized touch to any space.
